Summary0004076: Differences in solution and effects of the partitioning for different versions
DescriptionSolving the first time step of a rather simple OpenFOAM case, differences are found using different versions.
With version 9 (or 8), the velocity field is smooth (v9_p1_Umag), while with version 10 (or 11) this is much less the case (v10_p1_Umag).
I am aware that the scale is relatively small, but the solver tolerances are set to 1e-12 and the tolerances for the outercorrectorresiduals to 1e-10.

Moreover, using a different partitioning (p2.png instead of p1.png), no differences are visible for version 9 (or 8) (v9_p2_Umag), while for version 10 (or 11) the change in partitioning is visible in the solution (v10_p2_Umag.png). This is of course undesired.

There seems to be a change in between version 9 and 10 that causes the solution to be different, but what's more, this change also make the solution dependent on the partitioning. Any idea on what change this is or how it can be countered is appreciated.

To illustrate further, the field of the z-component of the velocity field is also shown, with the same naming conventions.
Figure v10_p2_Umag_2.png (the same as v10_p2_Umag.png but with a different scale) clearly shows numerical artefacts linked to the partitioning, especially when compared to the solver tolerances which are much lower.

The solutions with OpenFOAM versions 8 and 9 were identical, as were those with versions 10 and 11.
Steps To ReproduceThe decomposed case files to reproduce the figures are included as well as a script to run them.

I cannot reproduce the problem, I have run the v11 case is OpenFOAM-11 and OpenFOAM-dev and I get the same results as the v9 case, smooth results no fluctuations or anomalies.

Thank you for trying to reproduce the problem. I suspect the problem will be related to the compilation on our system.
We will look at this internally and hopefully we will be able to figure out what causes this problem.
