Summary0001544: findElements::findElements cannot find point inside domain
DescriptionHello. I have a listo of 45 points which are inside of the domain. the function
gives me an error form some of them:

--> FOAM Warning :
    From function findElements::findElements(const fvMesh&)
    in file probes/probes.C at line 111
    Did not find location (75746 23540 119.025) in any cell. Skipping location.

Which version of OpenFOAM are you using?

Are some of the point on or very near the boundary?

How do we reproduce the error? Is the case available somewhere?

the points are closed to a wall but there are alwayes some cell layers between
the points and the wall. The version is 2.3.0. Unfortunatly I cannot send you the case because it is industrial relevant. But I saw resent similar bug reports: http://www.openfoam.org/mantisbt/view.php?id=1349

Do you get the same behavior with OpenFOAM-2.3.x?

Are the points which cannot be found colocated with mesh vertices, edges or faces?

Hello!

I installed OpenFOAM-2.3.x and the same bug occured. Some points which are not found are close to faces bot some are well in the middle of the cell.

Furthermore I relized that the
 cellRepresentation is of type FACEDIAGTETS. So I guess something goes wrong in the pointInCell function in polyMesh.C for the case FACEDIAGTETS

i think everything is ok with the mesh. checkMesh does not give any wornings

Yes if they cause negative face-pyramids, but this looks OK for your mesh.

Could you sub-set a section of the mesh containing cells in which points are not found and those point locations and up-load it for testing?

I uploaded a Allrun file. just copy all file above (exept checkmesh.out boundary and cellZones) to a folder and execute Allrun. The output of the
probeLocation application is stored in the log.probeLocation file. All points in the probesDict are located in the domain. The 4th point is not found by the application probeLocation.

As far as I've understood, the function pointInCell takes the scalar products of the face normals with the vector pointing from the face center to the point to check if it lies insied the cell. If all scalar products are negative, the point lies inside the cell.

I think that for concave cells this algorithm fails. I attechad a sketch where I show the ares of the cell for which the algorithm fails. (only in 2D but I think it applies also for the more general case).

Indeed, and I am testing a change to use the methed used in the lagrangian library which will handle concave cells provided that all face-pyramids are positive which is the current restriction for tracking. I should be able to push this fix later today.

I'd like to open this report again. The current (230+) implementation
of cellRepresentation modes FACECENTRETETS and FACEDIAGTETS is
not very useful since only applicable to concave cells.

I propose we either
- revert to the 22x implementation which checked the tets individually.
This would make the FACEDIAGTETS mode equivalent to CELL_TETS.
or
- replace the uses of FACEDIAGTETS with CELL_TETS:

OpenFOAM/meshes/polyMesh/polyMesh.C: replace all & add to findCell for triggering of tetBasePtIs()
lagrangian/basic/InteractionLists/InteractionLists.C: replace all
meshTools/meshSearch/meshSearch.H: replace all
meshTools/meshSearch/meshSearch.C: add to triggering of tetBasePtIs()

No need to replace:
meshTools/mappedPatches/mappedPolyPatch/mappedPatchBase.C: no need to replace

I am not sure what should be replaced with what. In OpenFOAM-dev CELL_TETS is already used in pointInCell and neither FACECENTRETETS or FACEDIAGTETS are present as this part of the code has already been significantly changed.

Could you provide details of exactly what changes you would like made to OpenFOAM-dev with rationale?

In OpenFOAM-dev FACEDIAGTETS is defined in

dynamicMesh/polyTopoChange/polyTopoChange/tetDecomposer.H

but not used explicitly, it appears to be implicitly used as the default alternative to FACECENTRETETS. Given that the eptions are defined as an enumeration it would seem more logical to use a switch/case statement or would you rather the FACEDIAGTETS removed/replaced?

- polyMesh::findCell: you want to do '(void)tetBasePtIs()' for CELL_TETS as well as FACE_DIAG_TRIS. This is to handle parallel running with 0 cells on one of the domains.
- meshSearch::meshSearch: same for both constructors

- sampling/meshToMesh0/calculateMeshToMesh0Addressing.C: change to use CELL_TETS in the constructor of treeDataCell. The treeDataCell is the container for the indexedOctree and passes the cellDecomposition on to the polyMesh::pointInCell to do the actual test. It makes sense to use CELL_TETS.

The enumeration in polyMesh could be used - the only one that does not make sense is FACE_PLANES. Both FACE_DIAG_TRIS and CELL_TETS do the same.


polyMesh::findCell: line 1504 : this test needs to move up to the top of the function and include CELL_TETS

Why? In parallel you might have 0 cells on one of the domains. So this domain never enters pointInCell, and would never trigger building of tetBasePtIs. (the building of tetBasePtIs uses parallel communication to determine coupled faces)
